3D film

Prometheus ComicCon

The long awaited sci-fi comeback of Ridley Scott is being introduced at the public of Comic-Con right now. Apparently they are showing some footage there, but for now we’ll have to conform ourselves with this new picture released by 20th Century Fox.

This movie is pretty interesting since it was meant to be a prequel to the Alien franchise. At first, it was going to be directed by Carl Erik Rinsch and produced by Ridley Scott and his brother Tony. But Fox pressured Ridley Scott to direct it, so he did.

Eventually through pre-production, the team decided that the mythology evolved into something so different that they downplayed the prequel thing.

At Comic-con, Ridley Scott appeared via satellite from Iceland and said these things about the movie:

3D has been a wonderful exercise but I was brought up as a camera operator so its really about lensing and all that kind of stuff. So with the help I’ve had from a wonderful cameraman and his technical team its been, for me, a pretty straight forward ride. That said  I’ll never work without 3D again, even for small dialogue scenes. I love the whole process. 3D opens up the universe of even a small dialogue scene so I’ve been very impressed with that.

Scott has already mentioned before that 3D was looking fantastic after seeing the first footage of the then in production James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s reassuring that he loved working on this new format.

Prometheus cast includes Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender as David, an android, Guy Pearce, Ben Foster, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green as Holloway, Elizabeth’s love interest and Sean Harris.

It is set to be released on June 8, 2012.

Hugo teaser poster

Martin Scorsese’s long awaited first entry into the 3D realm has a teaser poster and an official trailer out.

Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is an orphan boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station. He meets Isabelle (Chloë Moretz) where they will live a magical adventure.

It is based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabre written by Brian Selznick.

Trailer is embedded below.

Martin Scorsese said in interviews that he was really enthusiastic about experimenting with a new movie format, he recalls 3D as having the same impact as the arrival of sound. It’s great to hear somebody as Scorsese so open minded about 3D.

Hugo will be distributed by Paramount Pictures and is set for release on November 23, 2011 in the States.

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides

The 4th installment of the mega blockbuster Disney franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean” just got a trailer released.

By looking at this trailer we can expect; killer mermaids, zombies, hot spanish girl and good ole pirate fun.

The cast includes Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane among others.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is set for release on May 20th, 2011.

Transformersdarkofmoonlogo2

Peter Jackson Red camera

Peter Jackson announced that for his epic production “The Hobbit”, he’ll use 30 Epic Red digital cameras from Red Digital Cinema. Those cameras are pretty much the revolution on digital movie making, launched in 2007 by Oakley founder Jim Jannard, these toke the film industry by storm by offering high quality digital ‘film’ that rivals, and even surpass, traditional film, costing only a fraction of what a 35mm film costs.

Peter Jackson already made use of this camera in the past, he even made a short film entirely with one of the prototypes a couple of years ago, even his produced “District 9” sci-fi movie was entirely shot with Red One cameras.

But for The Hobbit, Jackson has bigger plans, he’ll use the next-generation of this cameras with a 3D setup, the Red Epic camera. It offers a higher resolution (almost matching IMAX quality) and it can capture up to 120 frames per second.

What does this means? Well, for the end customer we can expect a IMAX 3D release with these cameras without scarifying the quality of the overall picture. For the film-makers, this will ease the post-production process since it’s all digital and also allow them to shot much more without spending more money on film, which is really liberating for traditional movie directors.

But remember, these are only tools, it’s all upon the artist to make great use of it, but since we’re talking about Peter Jackson here, expect epic stuff (pun intended) coming from this.
