performance capture

David Fincher

One of my favorite directors working today is David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, The Social Network, etc). And I was pretty intrigued seeing him talking at an Actors Studio Q&A at the Swedish Film Institute about what he thinks about Performance Capture (the technique pioneered in Avatar and being used in Tintin by Spielberg).

He mentioned an interesting bit about his upcoming production ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ for Disney.

Its vision for the film is to make it 70% CG, which is not that far of a stretch since Fincher is known for using CG techniques extensively in his films (even in thrillers as Zodiac he recreated entire streets of San Francisco of the 70’ in CG).

The movie is still far away from full production since he’s still working on the English adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, to be released this Christmas.

adventures-of-tintin-movie-image

Following the teaser trailer reveal 2 months ago, a new image just got released by Paramount pictures/Columbia Pictures featuring our favorite Belgium teenager (?) reporter Tintin and his friendly dog companion Milou.

As mentioned before, The Adventures of tintin: Secret of the Unicorn is directed by Steven Spielberg in his first entry into the bizarre world of hybrid animation/live action called performance capture (and already tried by his former protégée Robert Zemeckis but perfected by James Cameron). The movie is also being produced by Peter Jackson and his digital special effects studio Weta Digital. It is rumored that Jackson will direct the sequel, but this is still a moot point since he’s pretty busy with The Hobbit to really consecrate himself into it.

We can see that the photorealistic approach is really paying off. Of course, the movie will feature very exaggerated characters, such as Captain Haddock (being played by Andy Serkis), as seen before on this blog.

The movie is set for release starting this October in Europe and 23th of December in the United States on IMAX 3D and Real D 3D equipped theaters.

adventure-of-tintin-poster

The official poster and first teaser trailer of The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn is finally available online.

The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson, is an adaptation of the legendary Belgium comic book series made by Herge.

The movie has been in development hell for more than 2 decades, but Spielberg got convinced by James Cameron’s Avatar that the technology to do the series justice had finally arrived.

Trailer embedded bellow.

The movie is still under post production, but it’s set to arrive worldwide starting this November in 3D theaters and IMAX 3D.

As expected, Disney released the trailer of Imagemovers Digital new (and last?) production.

The movie is directed and written by Simon Wells and produced by Robert Zemeckis.

It tells the story of a young boy named Milo (Seth Green) who sees his mother being abducted. He tries to rescue her by jumping into the spaceship that leads to Mars.

Movie looks fun, I understand the concerns of the style being weird, not realistic enough, creepy, etc. but I think this is the point of these movies, to be surreal and not realistic. But that’s just me.

The movie is set for release this March 11th 2011 on IMAX 3D and Digital 3D theaters.

tintin empire magazine

Empire Magazine just revealed the cover of their December 2010 issue and it features the first look at Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson joint production The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn.

Spielberg always wanted to do a Tintin movie adaptation since the eighties, but now, with the technologies developed at Jackson’s Weta digital facilities (thanks to Avatar), he can make it the way he really wanted: with crazy looking cartoonish photorealistic characters.

So yeah, the movie is being made with performance capture and it looks like they are achieving what they are looking for.

Empire also released a couple of pictures showing Captain Haddock, portrayed by Andy Serkis (Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy).

landaucameron

20th Century Fox just announced today that James Cameron has signed to write and direct the next installments of the Avatar saga (no big surprise here)

John Landau will, once again, be partnering with James Cameron on the production.

There are rumors that the sequels will happen under the sea of Pandora and even within the galaxy.

There was some rumors about James Cameron making a Cleopatra movie for Sony Pictures, with Angelina Jolie as the lead, but Fox rushed in to make Cameron sign the papers to produce their next cash cows.

So be ready to get back on Pandora in some years.
